Until Wednesday, the Pan American Games had been a
bit of a letdown for Chile, with Chilean participants only winning four bronze medals. By Wednesday night, though, the country had added Köbrich’s gold, two silver and three other bronze medals.
The two silvers came in cycling, which was expected to be a Chilean strength. Luis Mansilla won silver in the men's omnium 1km time trial race. The men’s team of Antonio Cabrera, Gonzalo Miranda, Pablo Seisdedos and Luis Sepulveda won the silver medal in the men’s team pursuit.
Wednesday also, Köbrich won a bronze medal in 400-meter freestyle swimming and thus guaranteed her spot in the 2012 Olympics. Gonzalo Mondaca won a bronze medal in 10-meter air-rifle.
In the lightweight four-man, coxless rowing, Felipe Leal, Fernando Miralles, Rodrigo Muñoz, and Fabián Oyarzún won the bronze medal, only losing the lead to Cuba in the last seconds.
Still, Wednesday brought Chile some letdowns, too. The women’s handball team was eliminated, along with archer Denisse Van Lamoen. Both had been medal hopefuls.
Remaining Chilean medal contenders, all with wins under their belts, include the Chilean women’s field hockey team, the women’s table tennis team and men’s doubles tennis.
A number of events have yet to begin where Chile has hopes of winning medals, including gymnastics and fencing.
The Pan American Games will continue through Oct. 30.
