(Ed. Note: Everybody has an opinion about the current Wall Street meltdown and how best to deal with it, but perhaps the opinion of a Nobel Prize winner in economics should carry special weight.

So it is interesting that recent  remarks by Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz to European reporters did not get much play in the U.S. media.  Could it be that the U.S. media, so comfortable with Wall Street’s crony capitalists, is part of the problem, too?

Hunger Strike Mapuches Demand Negotiations With Government

Physical problems reported

Thirty-two imprisoned Mapuche activists reached the 50th day of their hunger strike over the weekend. The Mapuches were jailed for acts of violence under an anti-terrorism law created during the regime of dictator Augusto Pinochet.     

The majority are members of CAM (Arauco Malleco Co-ordination), an organization formed in 1998 known for its ongoing attempts to recover Mapuche territory.

Fight Escalates To Block Thermoelectric Plant On Chile’s Coast

Environmental groups rally against construction of plant near marine reserve


Since the Regional Environmental Commission of Coquimbo (Region IV) Tuesday approved plans for a coal-powered thermoelectric plant about 14 miles from the Punta de Choros marine reserve, environmental organizations have used broad social networking to push harder against the initiative.

On Tuesday night, around 2,000 demonstrators gathered on Alameda Ave., the principal street in Santiago, to voice their opposition to the plant and to pressure president Sebastian Piñera to stand by his campaign promise to oppose the plant.
