Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet on Tuesday inaugurated the new Siete Tazas National Park, the first park of its kind in south central Chile's Maule Region.

Body Found In Northern Chile Identified As Uruguayan Who Vanished After 1973 Coup

The body of a woman who disappeared during the 1973 military coup in Chile has been identified as Mónica Benaroyo Pencu, a Uruguayan professor of philosophy and translator.

The body was found in 2008 in army territory in Arica, a city in northern Chile, but was never identified until now. Legal Medical Service Director Patricio Bustos confirmed Monday that the mummified remains belonged to Benaroyo, who had been a victim of the repression after Chile’s 9/11/73 military coup led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet.  Pinochet, with help from U.S. President Richard Nixon and the CIA, overthrew democratically elected Socialist President Salvador Allende.

Moving Solar Panels Installed in Northern Chile

New solar panels that move in sync with the sun have recently been built in La Tirana in northern Chile.  They harvest 40 percent more energy than conventional, static solar panels. 

The 10 solar panels, the first of their kind in Chile, are attached to a water pump to provide irrigation water for nearby farms.  The well is 27 meters deep and pumps four cubic meters an hour.  The project cost about US$450,000 and is expected to run for 20 years.

1,000 Chilean High School Students Protest In Santiago
