Sport has been a key part of each one of President Sebastián Piñera's May 21 addresses. This year, the president highlighted the work done on stadiums throughout the country, as well as the efforts toward turning Chile into a “true international capital of sport” and a “country of athletes.”

With much convincing from coach Jorge Sampaoli, the ‘fantasista’ returns to play for Chile’s national soccer team after eight years of self-imposed exile.

After weeks of speculation it has been confirmed: Chilean football hero David Pizarro will return to play for the Chilean national soccer team, “La Roja.”

Española started this weekend’s round on top of the division, leading Universidad Católica by the narrowest of margins on goal difference. The two teams were tied on 29 points Saturday morning, but with Católica’s dramatic capitulation in Wednesday’s Copa Chile final, the stage was set for Española to pile further pressure on its cross-town rival.

Both teams went into this crucial “Clásico Universitario” evenly matched. Universidad Católica had been enjoying a good run in the league of late while Universidad de Chile was fresh from its dramatic “Superclásico” win over Colo Colo. The two Santiago teams are still in contention for the Primera Division top-spot but it was Universidad de Chile who took home the first trophy of the season in a frenetic match that saw it come out as deserving winners.

Wednesday evening will see Universidad Católica defend its Copa Chile title against arch rival Universidad de Chile. This “clásico universitario” marks the first of the season’s two meetings between the rival clubs, with Universidad Católica hosting “La U” later this month at the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo in the Torneo Transición.

Sunday saw Universidad de Chile host Colo Colo for the 173rd “superclásico.” The home-side went into the Santiago derby knowing that no less than a win would see it stay in contention for the title.

Chile traveled to Belo Horizonte in Brazil on Monday in anticipation of a friendly inaugurating the renovated Mineirao Stadium, ahead of its use in the 2013 Confederations Cup and next year’s World Cup. However Sampaoli’s preparations in only his third game at the helm of “La Roja” were disrupted somewhat by disciplinary issues surrounding Universidad de Chile midfielder Charles Aránguiz.
