International Traffic In Chile’s Regional Airports Up By 55% |

 Increased travel to Chile’s tourist sites, tax free zones, and mining areas have necessitated greater travel to regional airports, the Civil Aeronautics Board reported last week. As a result, Iquique and Easter Island lead in the number of flights, followed by Arica and Punta Arenas.
According to the Board, the number of international passengers using one of the twelve regional airports within the last five years has increased by 55 percent. By June of this year, 34 million passengers had used one of Chile’s regional airports.

 Rival Canadian gold mining companies Goldcorp and Eldorado have locked horns in a fight to buy up Andean Resources Ltd.
Eldorado moved first, offering US$3.2 billion for the Australian company early last Friday. But Eldorado was trying to pre-empt Goldcorp, who immediately announced a US$3.4 billion offer that had already been privately agreed with Andean's board.

 Argentine president Cristina Kirchner late last week called on Mercosur partners to convert the group into the world’s leading agro-food business region and to put an end to asymmetries.
“We need to deepen our relationship with Brazil, which must include Uruguay and Paraguay”, said Mrs Kirchner in her closing speech before the Argentine seminar on the Agro-food, Agro-industry Strategic Plan 2010/2016.

 Indian Industry and Commerce Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that India and Mercosur are discussing the possibility to expand a current agreement on tariffs.
“Teams from both sides have been meeting and we pledged to develop a list of new products to be included in the agreement in November this year,” Scindia told a press conference after the India-Brazil Business Meeting in Sao Paulo.

 Chile’s peso rose on the first day of September, -- and now stands at 500 to the US dollar— as a result of increased manufacturing growth in China and greater demand for Chilean copper.
The peso appreciated 0.5% to 500.38 per U.S. dollar from 502.75 on Tuesday. The Chilean currency increased 3.7% against the greenback during August and on several days broke through the milestone 500 mark.

Korea, Peru Conclude Free Trade Agreement Effective Next Year |

 Korea and Peru concluded in Lima negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA), which is expected to go into effect midway through next year once it is approved by the parliaments of the two countries.
The agreement reached this week boosts bilateral trade which has risen over the past few years to US$1.4 billion in 2009. The target is US$7 billion by 2016, said Peruvian president Alan García at the ceremony in Government Palace.

 Canada, South Africa and India are scheduled to begin trade talks this year with Mercosur, according to reports from Ottawa and Johannesburg.
In what seems a major change in world trade pattern, priority is been given to non-traditional partners and economic blocks in the developing world, ahead of the U.S. and European Union, said the South African and Indian Trade ministers.

 Uruguay pledged efforts to seek a stronger relationship with Beijing since “China is an essential factor in the international development of Uruguay,” said Vice-President Danilo Astori following an hour long meeting in Beijing with his counterpart Wu Bangguo, president of the National Assembly.
“Despite the long distance between the two countries, Chinese and Uruguayans share good feelings for each other,” said Wu Bangguo adding that China-Uruguay diplomatic relations since established in 1988, “have developed smoothly” with substantial benefits for both countries.

 Argentina’s hotel building boom can be held up as a symbol of South America’s climb back from the global downturn. The country has 15 projects in the development pipeline representing 1,700 rooms, according to STR Global. Of those 1,700 rooms, 68.9% or 1,172 are currently in the in-construction phase of development.
Argentina’s pipeline is bested in South America only by tourism mecca Brazil, which shows 51 projects comprising 7,042 rooms.
