Many stay away because of the earthquake

Brazilian tourists, who usually come to Chile to ski during the winter months, did not turn up as strongly as in years past, hurting the ski resorts, hotels and tourism in general this year. 

In 2010, according to figures from Sernatur (the National Service of Chilean Tourism), 37,093 Brazilian tourists came to Chile in June and July.  In 2009, the figure for these two months was at 39,705.  In June and July of 2008, 57, 543 Brazilian tourists came.

Chile Looks To Relax Casino Laws To Cater To Cruise Ship Tourism | Print |  E-mail

The Ministry of the Economy is planning to send a bill to Chile’s Congress that would allow cruise ships to operate their casinos while in Chilean waters. This would repeal a section of the 2005 Casinos Act that requires all cruise ships to shut down their casinos when they pass within 13.8 miles of Chile's shoreline.

Air France To Increase Flights Between France and Chile | Print |  E-mail

Air France announced that beginning Sept. 6, it will add more flights between Paris and Santiago. The airline currently offers five flights per week, but by September plans to increase that number to seven.

Passenger capacity per week will increase by 40 percent with the addition of the flights, according to Air France's general manager in Chile, Thibaud Morand.

Valparaíso also faces dwindling number of cruise visitors

The business community in Punta Arenas in the extreme south of Chile has begun to campaign to ensure the cruise industry does not abandon the city, and is asking authorities for a radical change in the costs policy, which seems to be one of the main causes for the current situation.

Ski resorts in Chile’s central and southern regions plan to stay open until the end of October, after abundant snowfall and record-low temperatures caused a spike in tourist visits in the past few weeks.

“The quality and quantity of snow has provided very positive conditions,” said Valle Nevado General Manager Ricardo Margulis. “To date, there has been an increase in visitors, especially families.”

With less than a month before the beginning of the 2010-2011 cruise season, prospects for Punta Arenas in the extreme south of Chile are not encouraging.

Cruise ship tourism is expected to drop by 33 percent compared to last year, according to the Southern Docking Company (EPA), which manages local port activities. This means that the number of cruise passengers expected this season will be 20,000 less — at 40,921, from 60,737 — this coming season, the worst scenario in the last seven years.

Northern Chile Anticipates Tourism Boost With Construction Of World’s Largest Telescope | Print |  E-mail

With the installation of the world's biggest telescope planned in northern Chile, many communities there are hoping the tourism industry will benefit from the world of astronomy.

The world's biggest telescope, the European Extremely Large Telescope, is to be built on Cerro Armazones, a mountain about 80 miles southeast of the city of Antofagasta. The largest radio astronomy project will also be constructed about 280 miles to the northeast, in Chajnantor, between 2012 and 2013.

New Route Inaugurated To Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park | Print |  E-mail

Public Works Minister Hernán de Solminihac recently inaugurated a new US$9.6 million highway - Route 9 - connecting Puerto Natales to Villa Cerro Castillo, in the region of the Torres del Paine National Park.

The road is expected to help increase tourism in the area (reducing travel time between Puerto Natales and the park) and to generally improve connectivity in the remote area of Patagonia.

Uruguay is overall champion of tourism in Latin America, according to the Latin Tourism Index from the Latin Business Chronicle.

The index of 15 countries in Latin America shows tourism’s total impact in a country by measuring receipts as a percent of GDP and arrivals per capita using 2009 data from the World Tourism Organization and the International Monetary Fund. It also looks at growth in receipts and arrivals.

Seeks major increase in tourism revenues

Brazilian President Lula da Silva last week launched the “Brazil Is Calling You” campaign in Johannesburg, South Africa, after the African country officially handed over the keys to Brazil as the next host nation of the FIFA World Cup.

The new campaign to promote the 2014 Cup consists of movies, images and social media that aim to attract tourism and business to Brazil. Starting Monday, it will be broadcast globally on television channels and on YouTube. The most recent World Cup games, of course, just ended Sunday with Spain’s 1-0 victory over the Netherlands.

Chile Tourism On The Rebound, Post-Earthquake, Says Chile´s Sernatur | Print |  E-mail

Sernatur, Chile´s tourism promotion office, reported this week that the tourism sector is on the upswing, with a 7.5 percent increase in tourism tallied for May.

The principal destinations for tourists in Chile are Santiago and the surrounding area, such as the ski resorts, which attract 45 percent of foreign visitors. Valparaíso and Viña del Mar bring in 21 percent, and the Lake District (Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas), 17 percent.
