Salmon Industry Upset With Legal Challenge To Chile’s New Fishing Law

Constitutional tribunal to rule on legality of 25-year salmon fishing concessions

Salmon industry leaders last week expressed their disappointment with 34 legislators who are challenging the newly passed "Ley de Pesca" (Fishing Law) in Chile’s Constitutional Court (TC).

Congress passed the controversial law in early March in an effort to help Chile's ailing salmon industry, once a US$2 billion industry, get back on its feet.  The law provides special credits for the salmon industry and – most controversially – provides salmon companies 25-year concessions to coastal waters where salmon farms are located.
