The commission reopens to victims of the military regime
The Valech commission (The National Commission on Political Imprisonment and Torture), created by former Chilean president Ricardo Lagos in 2003, will start accepting new reports on people tortured under the Pinochet military regime.
The commission, set up to detail abuses committed between 1973 and 1990 by agents of the military regime, will spend the next six months, until August 16, accepting new cases.
José Antonio Viera-Gallo, minister secretary general of the presidency, called on people to approach the organization “to have their case heard and to see if they qualify to receive any benefits.”
