Policeman Dies In More Mapuche Violence In Southern Chile

A police officer suffered a stroke and died this weekend during a clash with 30 of the region's indigenous Mapuche in Chile's southern Araucanía region.

Claudio Godoy Benavente (30), a corporal of the Carabinero Special Forces, was running on the outskirts of the skirmish when he suddenly collapsed.  Police say he did not appear to have suffered any injuries related to the skirmish, which ignited when a group of five Mapuche attempted to illegally enter the grounds of "Roble Haucho," about 10 kms southwest of Temuco.
