The full-length feature was chosen by the Spanish Film Academy as a finalist in the category of Best Iberoamerican Film. Wood previously reached the finals for the same category with his earlier films “Machuca” (in 2005) and “The Good Life,” which was awarded first place in 2009.
“Violeta se fue a los cielos” was released in Chile in August 2011 and stars actress Francisca Gavilán as its protagonist. The film depicts episodes from the life of Chilean singer-songwriter Violeta Parra who, in addition to being a musician, was also a talented painter and sculptor. The troubled genius came from a well-known family of Chilean artists including
Nicanor Parra, who was recently awarded the Cervantes literary prize for his writing. Violeta Parra killed herself in 1967, leaving behind a legacy of popular Chilean folk music associated with the political left.
Almost 400,000 people saw the film in Chile in 2011. It will compete against three other motion pictures: “Ticket to Paradise” by Gerardo Chijona (from Cuba), “Miss Bullet” by Gerardo Naranjo (from Mexico), and “A Chinese Story” by Sebastián Borensztein (a co-production between Argentina and Spain). The winner will be announced on Feb. 19 in Madrid.
Last year’s first prize in the Best Iberoamerican Film category, which recognizes Spanish-language films originating from outside Spain, went to another Chilean feature, “The Life of Fish,” by young Chilean filmmaker Matías Bize.
