Latest border violation furthers growing tensions between Chile and Bolivia.

President Sebastián Piñera confirmed Tuesday that a group of Bolivians entered Chile in an apparent attempt to provoke members of the Carabineros, Chile’s national police force, to pursue them across the border into the neighboring country.

pineraboliviaAccording to Piñera, the group of Bolivians, dressed in military-style camouflage, crossed into Chile and forcefully stole a van. They then proceeded to flee back toward the border, provoking the Carabineros to follow them.

The Chilean police force responded immediately after receiving a call from the victim whose van was stolen but stopped short of crossing into neighboring Bolivia.

Piñera spoke with Radio Bio Bio confirming the details of the incident. He said continued tensions between Chile and Bolivia are likely to create similar situations.

“We are probably going to have more provoking incidents in the future,” Piñera said.
