President Piñera visits Mapuche commune a day after major protest in Santiago.

President Sebastián Piñera paid a controversial visit to a new development area in the indigenous Mapuche neighborhood of Ercilla on Tuesday, just a day after indigenous leaders claimed he was not welcome in their territory.

Ercilla is situated in Chile’s Araucanía region, which is home to a strong Mapuche population and some of the country’s highest poverty rates.

"A good father takes care of all his children, especially those with problems,” the president said during his visit. “I am very aware that the Araucanía region is one of the poorest regions in our country.”
