Supreme court upheld guilty verdict for former Mayor Nelson Schwerter.
Accused nearly a decade ago for illegally trafficking Alerce trees, Nelson Schwerter, former mayor of Fresia in Puerto Montt, was definitively convicted by the Chilean Supreme Court on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s Supreme Court decision upheld the verdicts of lower courts maintaining that Schwerter knew the Alerce wood he exported had been obtained by illegal means.
Alerce or Chilean Larch, a relative of California red wood, is protected under both international and national law by the Convention of International Trade of Endangered Species protections (CITES). Its logging, sale or purchase are internationally prohibited.
