Families, rescue crews celebrate as rescue enters final stage

Following a drilling process that has lasted, coincidentally, 33 days, the machine nicknamed 'Plan B' successfully reached the 33 miners trapped underground in the San Jose mine in northern Chile.

The drill, which for some time had been expected to be the one of three drills to reach the miners first, broke through into an underground workshop around 8 a.m. Saturday morning, causing family members and rescue crews at the mine site to break into mass celebration.

Late Friday, as crews reported the drill had reached the final 40 meters, family members kept up vigil on the site, where they have been camping out since the 33 miners became trapped on Aug. 5.
