U.N. experts call for amnesty law to be eliminated.
On Tuesday, United Nations experts called for the government to develop a more coherent system of handling forced disappearances during the regime of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. The working group of experts recently concluded an eight-day investigation into the disappearances during the 17-year regime.
“No other country in the world has paid economic reparations to victims of forced disappearances like Chile,” Ariel Dulitzky, one of the heads of the working group, said. “However, it is fundamental for the Chilean government to sustain a coherent policy.”
Government payouts on reparations currently total more than US$1.5 billion.
