Farmers, environmentalists clash with police in response to energy company’s draining of lake.
Around 200 farmers blockaded Chile’s main highway, Ruta 5, for about 90 minutes on Wednesday at a point about 210 miles south of Santiago. They were protesting last week’s decision by a local Court of Appeals to allow energy giant Endesa to extract 328 million cubic feet of water from the nearby Lake Maule.
